There is a long tradition of music in Robertsfors. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Robertsfors brass band was formed. An important decision was then taken in 1958. A music teacher post was set up and Västerbotten’s first music school was started. Thus, Robertsfors’ music school has been active for over 50 years and is one of Sweden’s oldest. Over the years, a large number of star performers such as Sahara Hotnights, Frida Hyvönen, Jimmy Källqvist, and Fredrik Wännman (to name just a few) received their first musical training as students here.
In 2013 and 2014, Robertsfors is celebrating the music school’s 55th anniversary. The music school has contributed to a number of students earning a living in the music industry in one way or another (e.g. as studio managers, sound technicians, etc.). Today, the music school has five teachers. A little over 60% of students in years 4 to 9 attend the music school. One of the celebrations being organised for the anniversary is a concert on the 12th of April. Several of our major, internationally famous artists are returning home to join the incredibly gifted local musicians of Robertsfors and the surrounding region. The concert is being held in Jenningshallen and entry is free. However, the number of places is limited, so please do turn up in good time. Frida Hyvönen, Josephine Forsman (Sahara Hotnights), Jimmie Källqvist (Idolorkestern) and Fredrik Wännman (song for Europe contestant) are amongst the returning performers joining the packed programme. Enjoy this fantastic concert in which Robertsfors shows off its music school and several of its former pupils who are now major stars. We are looking forward to a magical evening!
There is also a long tradition of music in combination with acting in Robertsfors. Robertsfors Musiksällskap (Music Company) has been active for over 40 years and, thanks to a great deal of voluntary work, has produced some 20 musical stage shows – shows that have put Robertsfors on the “culture map”. At the moment, the company is producing Anything Goes. Robertsfors Teater & Musik is the local branch of Riksteatern (Sweden’s national association of theatre companies) and makes it possible for the municipality’s residents to attend a wide range of varying types of performances. Robertsfors’ art association holds a handful of high quality exhibitions each year in Galleri Blickpunkten.
All the above have given Robertsfors a reputation as a vibrant municipality for culture. There is massive voluntary commitment and an ever growing number of people in local trade and industry also see culture as a development factor that contributes to creating growth.
The creative industries, in the wide sense of the concept, are now seen as important for the municipality’s development. This means that there are sound foundations for building towards our vision of being “Sweden’s best municipality from cultural and creative perspectives”. We want to turn the culture breeze into a culture hurricane. Through the Robertsfors + Music = True project, we are seeking to nurture old traditions and create the right conditions for a new and forward-looking economy.
